McCarthy will speak about craft and process. There will be a public lecture on Thursday evening, February 10, a writing workshop the morning of Friday, February 11, and an informal open discussion with Professor Corina Stan, sponsored by the Placing Race Working Group, Friday afternoon (February 11). All faculty are encouraged to attend.
For the Writing Workshop, Friday, February 11 at 10 a.m. Professor McCarthy asks that each participant “submit the first 2-3 paragraphs (max 1 page) of a piece they could imagine submitting somewhere as a non-academic essay for a general audience. We will look at some of these (I can’t guarantee we will have time to look at every single one, but we will try and examine a good number of them) and discuss strategies, pitfalls, and processes when working on the crucial opening moments of an essay.” Please email your submission to James Draney at james.draney@duke.edu.
