To everyone in the PAL community:

New Acting Director of PAL
I am delighted to announce that Sarah Beckwith (English, Theater Studies, Religion) will be Acting Director of PAL for 2013/14, when I will be on leave.  Sarah has been a member of PAL’s Steering Committee from the start. Before PAL began, she and I ran the Working Groups on Ordinary Language Philosophy together in the English Department.

Good-bye to Leonore Fleming
This summer we say good-bye to Leonore Fleming, who was PAL’s first Assistant Director, before she became our Associate Director. Without Leonore, PAL would simply not look the same. She helped to get PAL off the ground in 2009. She has designed our website, our posters, and all our leaflets and brochures. But more than all that, she has kept PAL running smoothly by keeping an eye on deadlines, and keeping a masterly to-do list! Leonore has been deeply committed to the very idea of PAL as a space where philosophy interacts with literature and the other arts. Nobody could have done a better job for PAL than Leonore. Of course, we also understand that it is time for her to begin her new career as an Assistant Professor of Philosophy, but we will miss her terribly!

New Website
Leonore’s parting gift to PAL is our new website: https://dukepal.org/
We hope you will enjoy the fresh and lively design, and the easy access to PAL’s past and future events.  Also, don’t forget to sign our guestbook: https://dukepal.org/about/guestbook/

PAL’s Assistant Directors
In 2013/14 PAL will have two Assistant Directors. I am happy to say that Kaila Brown (English), who is already a PAL veteran, will continue to work for PAL. She will be joined by Heather Wallace (Philosophy), who already is hard at work learning the PAL way of doing things, with input from Leonore and Kaila. Both Sarah and I are delighted to have such wonderful assistants to share the work of running PAL.

Upcoming Events
Finally, I want to give you a sneak preview of next year’s events, which promise to be exciting. Sarah already has a great set of events lined up, here are some highlights.

We are looking forward to another exciting year and hope you will join us!

best wishes,
